We travel as often as possible to The Motherland to gain cultural perspective and deeper interconnectedness with our African brothers and sisters. For this reason and more, my father and I visit an African nation once a year to become closer to our ancestors and learn what the beautiful continent has to offer.
We chose Dakar, Senegal to explore the country’s land, people, nature, and slave history. But one of the most unique visits was to the African Renaissance Monument, an immaculate 171-foot bronze statue that is the tallest in Africa.
Standing atop one of the twin hills, Collines des Mamelles, the monument overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and depicts a super-fit father holding his child in one arm while embracing his wife in the other. Designed by Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby Atepa, the African Renaissance Monument symbolizes Africa’s emergence and unity.
I was so enamored with the distinguishingly commanding figure that I returned for a second visit and actually worked out by running up and down the lengthy flight of stairs a few times. Afterward, head over to Matcha Cafe around the corner to refuel. The lovely little bistro serves healthy vegan options, including veggie ramen, tofu sushi rolls (I added cucumber and avocado), a vegan matcha smoothie, avocado salad, and more.
Keep exploring the world, people, and opening up your consciousness. One Love!
